Card 6: Listening tools (Brandwatch, Meltwater, Brand24, Lumen by Talkwalker)

Sales team2 min read
  • Their pitch: deep media and social monitoring with history and analyst tooling.
  • Our edge: monitoring tied to action: what moved becomes a draft in your own voice, through your approvals and rules.
  • Ask: "When an alert fires, who acts on it, and how long does that take?"
  • Where they win: data depth and history, broadcast and print coverage, analyst tooling, PR workflows. Watch does not replace a media monitoring contract. Do not compete on depth; compete on what happens next.
  • Where we win (GREEN): a watched subject, story or meeting becomes a draft, then goes through approvals and rules; Watch for the people who post (named clients, prospects, competitors or regulators; what moved, a risk level, a 30-day trend; daily and weekly briefings); seat prices and no automatic renewals.
  • Landmines: "When does your contract renew, and what's the notice period?" The alert question. "How many of your people see the monitoring, and how many turn it into a post?"
  • If they say:
  • "We already have Meltwater (or Brand24)." Say: "Keep it for coverage and history. We add the step after the alert: Holly turns what moved into a draft in your voice, through your approvals. Can I show you on a subject you care about?"
  • "We just need monitoring." Say: "Then a monitoring tool may be the honest answer. Ours feeds what your people post. If nobody's posting, you won't get the value."
  • Never say: any Watch alert multiplier or alert number (an unexplained fault on 17 and 18 October produced inconsistent baselines; until fixed, D12, demo the feed, risk level and trend only); that Watch matches their volume or history; any LinkedIn listening claim; "Meltwater traps you" (ask the renewal question instead).
  • Switch story: rarely a switch: Watch bridges their monitoring and their people's posting. A small firm paying mainly to watch a handful of names: show Watch on those names and let them decide at renewal. If they start, the standard switch kit.
  • Reference: Brandwatch: pricing not published. Meltwater: from $10,000, $25,000 or $130,000 a year by tier; annual only, auto-renews unless cancelled 60 days before term end (Octolens, a competitor, 4 Aug 2026) [C]. Brand24: $199 to $1,499 a month (9 Sep 2026) [C]. Lumen: full sources on Enterprise only (Syncly, 17 Sep 2026) [C]. Buyers: PR, comms and insight teams, agencies, larger brands.
